I was reading Matt Casamassina's blog today, and his latest post was about the new first-person shooter Mirror's Edge, developed by DICE. I watched the trailer, and I was pretty impressed with the gameplay (if it was indeed, actually gameplay), as well as the presentation of the first-person mode, as Matt mentions he is a fan of as well. I'm guessing Matt liked it for the same reason I did, and that's because most FPS' aren't literally played in the first-person. Does anyone really have a gun protruding from their right cheekbone? Can we not see our torso and feet if we were to take a gander towards the ground? The only recent major title that did something like this was Halo 3 (and Halo 2 before it), but Bungie simply showed us the Chief's skinny lil' legs dancing around -- it wasn't something that gave Halo any style points. Call of Duty 4 actually does a decent job, but it still doesn't seem quite right. DICE looks like it may actually hit the nail on its head with Mirror's Edge. Check out the trailer below.
I can answer Matt's question as to why more developers don't try making FPS' in this style, though. Remember the Xbox first-person shooter Breakdown? 'Nuff said.
Hopefully Mirror's Edge ends up being as good as it looks.
Adios, amigos!
